From patterned rugs to fresh flowers to unconventional furniture pieces, adding personality to your bedroom doesn't require a large budget or a lot of effort -- just a bit of creativity. "How creative you can be when decorating your bedroom is wildly under appreciated," says home decor expert Nicole Hill, whose work has been featured on Etsy's Get The Look Decor blog, Decor8 Blog, and N.E.E.T Magazine. Keep reading for her eight fool-proof tips for infusing your personality into your boudoir.

"Layering various materials -- such as velvet, cotton and linen -- and patterns makes for a cozy atmosphere," says Hill. To create a sense of cohesion throughout the room, Hill recommends choosing patterns that suit your personality while remaining within the same general color palette. "The more layering in a bedroom, the more comfortable the room becomes," Hill explains.

Artwork

Artwork is one of the easiest ways to personalize your bedroom, as it's an extremely personal form of expression -- both for the artist and the buyer. Choose paintings, sculptures, sketches or photographs that speak to you. "A unique painting or two sitting inside a vintage fireplace mantel is a pretty typical look in my bedroom," shares Hill. Flea markets, yard sales and thrift stores are great places to find affordable treasures that'll make all the difference in your bedroom.

Perfect Lighting

"Lighting obviously sets the mood in a bedroom," confesses Hill, who prefers mismatched quirky vintage lamps at her bedside and paper lanterns and twinkle lights strung above her head in lieu of traditional overheard light sources. The perfect lighting makes all the difference in your bedroom, so consider unconventional light sources to achieve the effect you're looking for.

Fresh flowers can add a burst of color and whimsy to your room. Though the faux variety will obviously last longer, there's something particularly charming about fresh cut buds. "Flowers at the bedside are a must for me," says Hill. "They lift my spirits and add a touch of romance to the room."

Even if you're limited on space, accessorize your bedroom with more than just a bed, nightstand and dresser. A small corner of the room designated for reading or sipping tea allows you to spend more time in your bedroom when you aren't catching some zzz's. Quick tip: Scented candles and soft lighting are a simple way to add relaxing ambiance to a bedroom.

Creative Furniture

Use your imagination when furnishing your bedroom. For example, a $40 disheveled dresser can easily become a standout piece after it has been repainted. Additionally, a basic chair can house a tower of books in lieu of a traditional bookcase. "I prefer a stack of vintage suitcases and an old trunk as my bedside tables, as they are more interesting than traditional furniture and double as storage," shares Hill.

Snug Rugs

In addition to unifying a space, a rug provides a cozy place for your feet and adds character to your bedroom. Hill prefers fluffy Flokati rugs for comfort's sake, but she also recommends decorating with patterned rugs. "Layering Moroccan rugs on top of one another is one of my favorite looks in a bedroom," she says.

Pops of Color

Choose a statement color and use it boldly. Orange is infused into this bedroom via art, linens and even the lighting. The result is a dramatic and fresh use of color against a neutral background. Choosing colors within the same family has a similar effect (e.g. emerald, mint and sea foam greens or various shades of blue).
