A business casual day at the office or a conference isn't an invitation to let loose. Instead, it's an opportunity to show off your sense of casual style while maintaining a professional look. Don't let your fashion sense drift off when sporting business casual wear when the need to impress is still a priority. Keep your business casual wear trendy, yet professional with flattering colors, fabrics and sensible fashion designed for both work and play.

Too often, business casual equals khaki. Resist the urge to join the trend, says Sandy Dumont, Virginia-based image consultant. “Khakis often look rumpled, baggy and sloppy,” she says. Instead, choose tan trousers in a nice suit-pant fabric for a classy look. Add a solid color dress shirt to top off the casual style.

Although you may be comfortable in a golf shirt, unless your body is toned, it may not be the most flattering look, says Dumont. “They make the shoulders look droopy, so you look less confident,” she says. “Wear a dress shirt instead. It makes the shoulders look broad and squared, so you look more confident and strong. Fitted shirts look the most classy.” Dumont recommends a flattering French blue color or a royal blue dress shirt.

Although many businesses declare days for business casual wear, Dumont warns that clients may not be as impressed when you don’t dress up for them. Keep it casual yet classy with a variation of your daily business attire. “If you are in a highly competitive field, your version of casual attire should be dress trousers, a French blue shirt and red or yellow power tie without a jacket,” says Dumont. “Roll up your shirt sleeves for a casual look.”

Even though you may want to get casual with the day’s attire, don’t get too casual with footwear. Comfort can work, though. “Avoid athletic footwear,” says Dumont. “Black jogging shoes will not catch the eye.” Instead, opt for moccasins or loafers to show off your laid-back approach and sense of fashion.

When in colder climates, layering is a must; it's also a fashion plus. Ransley Carpio, director of business development for custom clothier Made + Measured, recommends slacks, a button down without a tie and a V-neck wool sweater. “If done properly, the V-neck will lengthen the torso and battle the cold,” said Carpio. Keep the look neat and clean by keeping your shirt, collar and sleeves tucked in.

If you're under five-foot-eight, consider casual clothing that will lengthen your look. Opt for slacks, a button down shirt without a tie and a cardigan. "The lengthening trick for the sweater is enhanced with the deepness of the cardigan," says Carpio. Don't ruin this look, though, by buttoning every button of the cardigan and wearing the same color slacks and cardigan. "It shouldn't look like a replacement for your suit jacket but more a layering opportunity," says Carpio.

The perfect mix between casual and dressy can be achieved with a vintage look. Throw on vintage corduroy pants in a relaxed fit and make a fashionable statement, says Hillary Cooper, New York-based stylist. Available in a variety of colors, cords work well with a cardigan, V-neck sweater or even a cashmere half-zip sweater for dressier events. Dress down by combining cords with a fitted Henley shirt.

When it comes to casual, your outerwear makes just as much of an impression as your outfit does. A casual coat is often an investment piece, says Cooper. “The Shearling Shawl collar coat would be an amazing addition to any man’s business casual wardrobe,” she says. A pea coat also works nicely with any casual style.
