Makeup is about experimenting, and finding the right red lip is no exception. From sultry burgundies and red-orange shades to bold, bright hues, all you need is some know-how to help you choose the best red lip color. Makeup artist Rachel Herrera reviews red carpet looks and shares tips on how you can find your perfect red pucker.

Red on Red

Actress Malin Akerman pairs a beautiful one-shoulder red dress with a bright red lipstick with warm orange undertones. “Even though Malin is fair, she has a warm skin tone. This lipstick goes well with her skin tone because it is in the same family; they are both warm,” says L.A.-based makeup artist Rachel Herrera, who works on the set of E! Entertainment. While matching red clothing to red lips isn’t a requirement, it does make for a show-stopping look. To imitate this look, just make sure your clothing and your lip color complement your skin tone.

Actress Mekenna Melvin steals the red carpet with her fresh pink-red lip and cascading shiny hair. Melvin’s dark long locks help bring out her gorgeous light eyes and her warm skin tone. Bold colors are risky but rewarding, says Herrera, who adds “a warmer lip color would also work well." Additionally, Herrera recommends wearing a peach or apricot lip color to make this look really shine.

Model and actress Beau Garrett appeared classy, yet sexy, when she arrived at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Her daring orange-red lip is a stand-out feature all on its own, especially since she matched the color well with her skin tone. Whether you have sky blue eyes or beautiful dark almond eyes, what’s important when choosing lip color is your skin tone, Herrera says. If you are not a red-lip diva, she notes, you can pull off the same glam effect by wearing dramatic eye makeup instead.

Myleene Klass wows at the U.K. Movie Premiere of “Tangled” with a polished makeup look that complements her relaxed and casual outfit. Since she has darker locks and darker skin, Herrera says that she has the freedom to wear a more daring lip color. “Her dark features make it easier to pull off the pink and red lip shades easier than a woman with fairer skin.” But, freedom with lip color does not mean it’s a free-for-all with blush. Herrera suggests pairing a light blush with a darker red lip color.

Matte to Perfection

Singer Janelle Monae arrived at Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture S/S 2011 sporting her signature style and a dazzling matte red lip. Since she is an African-American woman, Monae is able to pull off “a variety of shades and brightness of red lip colors,” says Herrera. Monae also wows in dark-pink blush that would otherwise appear clown-like on a lighter-skinned woman. Light eye makeup, including peaches, apricots and warmer-toned colors, look better on darker skin, Herrera says.

Reality TV personality Tila Nguyen, also known as Tila Tequila, ravishes in this bright red lip color. Herrera says that the lip color she is wearing has “a warm undertone that goes with her olive skin tone and is magnified by her dark hair and eyes.” Known for being exotic and sexy, Nguyen’s darker features allow her to “pull off a very dramatic red lip without looking overdone,” says Herrera. Herrera also suggests that warmer eye shadow colors would match better with a bold red lip.

Claire Danes made bright lips look effortless with bare shoulders and loose flowing locks when she arrived on the red carpet of the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Being a blonde allows Danes to sport a very pink lip that can work, Herrera says. Wearing dark eyeliner against light eyes and fair skin “will definitely make the eyes stand out,” and not overpower the red lips, says Herrera.

Actress Scottie Thompson plays up her sparkling blue eyes with “a great red lip color,” says Herrera, who adds this shade of red works nicely on fair to lightly tanned skin. The look is perfectly paired with a sheer light blush and lined eyes, she adds.

Flawless Color

When you’re a Brazilian-born supermodel like Jeisa Chiminazzo, it’s hard to look anything but fabulous. When she arrived at a screening for the movie “No Strings Attached,” Chiminazzo did not disappoint. She let her flawless red lip steal the attention from her eyes and cheeks when she paired it with gold earrings that warmed up her look. Chiminazzo did a perfect job balancing out her bold red lip color with her eye and matte makeup, Herrera says.

Actress Amber Heard conjures up Old Hollywood glam with a neutral-colored silk dress and come-hither hair. Deep red lips with a cool undertone complete this leading-lady look. “Fair blondes look best in a cooler lip color, and green eyes look best with plums, burgundy and cooler lip colors,” says Herrera, who recommends pairing the dark lip with a similar blush tone, light eyes and a dramatic black eyeliner. But be careful with this look, Herrera warns: too much makeup will have you looking like a circus performer rather than a movie star.

Berry Delightful

“Glee” actress Jenna Ushkowitz complemented her strapless gown with a bright pink-red lip and subtle makeup at the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Herrera recommends that a “matte berry lip will work even better for fair skin tones." Luckily this “Glee” starlet, Herrera says, has lots of choices and variety when choosing lip color due to her beautiful dark hair.
