How Much Should My Teacup Yorkie Puppy Eat?

A teacup Yorkshire terrier might be a tiny thing when viewed by humans, but these little dogs are still terriers. Terriers are tough, energetic, friendly and fearless. Yorkies are no exception. Yorkie pups are bright and interested in everything, and they have the metabolism to pursue that curiosity into every nook and cranny of the house and yard. For small dogs, they eat more than their share to support that energetic output.

What Not to Feed Yorkie Pups

Before determining how much to feed your Yorkshire terrier puppies, it is important to know what foods are absolutely forbidden. Begin with chocolate, because if the Yorkie pup finds chocolate, it will eat it. Keep it out of reach. Chocolate contains something called theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. What is toxic to big dogs is more toxic to small ones. Cocoa bean mulch contains the same substance. Never feed any dog grapes or raisins, because they can cause kidney failure. And, no greasy table scraps allowed.

Human Foods That Are Okay

Yorkie puppies will eat cooked vegetables and fresh fruits. It is alright to feed them these items as a treat, but no more than twice a day. Remember, this is a very small dog. Too many treats or treats that are too big can throw the dog off its regular feeding cycle. A spoonful of veggies or fruit is enough for one Yorkie puppy treat, preferably midway between regular feeding times. If the pup develops loose stools, discontinue the treats.

Doggie Treats

Yorkshire terriers are known to have dental problems from time to time. It is very important that they keep their teeth clean. Dogs need something stiff to abrade the surface of the teeth, and that is why milk bones and other hardened treats can serve as a welcome snack while helping to maintain your Yorkie pup’s dental health. Just as with other between meal treats, milk bones and other hard treats need to be kept small to correspond with the pup’s size. Your Yorkie pup needs not more than half of one milk bone between meals, and that not in conjunction with other snacks.

Feeding Schedule

Feed your Yorkie three or four times a day. Leave water out for it all day. It will know how much to eat each time and quit eating when it is full. Remember that food moves through this small dog quickly, so give it plenty of potty walks. Give USDA approved food only to your puppy, and make sure that meat is the first item on the ingredients list. Only one meal a day should be wet food. The rest needs to be dry and very small.
