Fiberglass insulation also loses its insulating ability when the insulation is compacted around pipes and duct work or when it is pressed into small places. There are a variety of R-values, or measures of thermal resistance, used for different areas that are to be insulated. Foam board is easier to work with than fiberglass insulation because they are in rigid sheets and do not have the associated fibers that can cause allergic reactions such as itching and sinus congestion.
