Corn gluten meal is a byproduct of the corn processing industry. Dr. Nick Christians, a horticulturist at Iowa State University, accidentally discovered the herbicidal properties of corn gluten meal in the course of his research and patented it as a pre-emergent herbicide. Corn gluten meal works by preventing roots from developing when a seed germinates. It also works as fertilizer for established plants because it is 10 percent nitrogen by weight. Corn gluten meal is an effective, non-toxic, organic alternative to chemical weed and feed products.
