Spreaders come in two varieties: drop spreaders and broadcast spreaders. Drop spreaders, as the name implies, drop fertilizer (or seed or whatever you're spreading) on your lawn as you walk behind them. Broadcast spreaders throw fertilizer evenly, as opposed to just dropping it straight down. They come in two types: Handheld broadcasters throw fertilizer pellets in every direction as you walk the lawn, turning the crank on the side of the spreader. Walk-behind broadcasters, as the name suggests, spread fertilizer pellets in all directions as you push them from behind.
