Shawnee State Park, 100 miles southeast of Cincinnati in Portsmouth, Ohio, has been dubbed "the Little Smokies" because its mountain ridges seem to meld with the horizon in a gentle blue haze. The park, near the banks of the Ohio River in the Appalachian foothills, was once the hunting grounds of the Shawnee Indians. Camping facilities include rental cabins and a full-service campground for tents and trailers.
Paint Creek State Park (dnr.state.oh.us), 60 miles south of Columbus, Ohio, is on the westernmost edge of the Appalachian Plateau, an area of woodlands and meadows punctuated by caves and a steep gorge.
