An experienced motorcyclist with a history free of hospital visits may have gained an understanding of physics that surpasses any classroom enlightenment. Advanced frame designs are implemented to allow such a rider some authority, even at the very brink of calamity. The normally benevolent effects of gravity, for example, are avoided or circumnavigated by the wary rider, and frames are adapted in support of these efforts. Successful frame designs employ centrifugal and gyroscopic dynamics to full advantage, while dampening, or alleviating contrary effects of these same forces. The laws that govern physics are primary factors in motorcycle frame designs.

Victory is one of America's few remaining motorcycle manufacturers, standing head-to-toe with its Milwaukee-based rival, Harley-Davidson. Over the years, Victory's machines follow the same classic lines of a cruiser-styled motorcycle, while retaining a style all of their own. The motorcycle's fuel-injected throttle is controlled by a traditional pair of steel cables, one to pull the throttle open while the other pushes it into a closed position. Over time, these steel cables can stretch through repeated use and eventually snap. The cables can be replaced by most Victory owners armed with a standard tool set; however, the motorcycle's fuel tank and…
Contrary to popular belief, motorcycles aren't just two-wheeled cars. While bikes use many of the same basic parts and operating principles, the bike as a whole often does without certain components that might add unnecessary cost, complexity and weight. This makes tuning motorcycles a slightly more delicate affair, especially where changes in airflow into and out of the engine are concerned.
A fuel leak on a 50 cc scooter is usually caused by a problem between the fuel tank, fuel hose or carburetor, if not all three. In most cases, leaks are caused by a damaged fuel tank, a broken fuel valve seal or a damaged fuel hose. The carburetor can be affected by debris in the fuel supply, which prevents the carburetor's internal valve from closing and causes the excess fuel to overflow. Likewise, the float arm that controls the valve can be improperly adjusted and allow more fuel than needed to enter the carburetor. The exact cause of the…

Exhaust baffles seem like something of an irritating and superfluous doodad for something designed for absolute freedom and simplicity. But those simple, metal plates do more than keep the squirrels happy at the expense of your precious horsepower; they perform a vital function in preserving the forest that you call your playground.
The clutch is one of the most commonly overlooked parts on a dirt bike and can cause various problems if not maintained properly. The clutch on a dirt bike allows you to change gears on the bike, enabling a smooth, consistent change of speed on the machine. Maintaining the clutch is key to owning a reliable dirt bike, especially if you use the bike often and there is a lot of wear and tear on the clutch. Maintenance will require you to remove the clutch in order to replace parts or clean the component.
Scooters have been a popular accessory for kids for many years, but the electric scooter has recently become a much more common mode of transportation for adults as well. Especially in light of the many "go green" initiatives, many people have chosen to use the electric scooter as a more environmentally friendly means of personal transportation. Aside from the ecological advantages of using an electric scooter, increasingly high gas prices are prompting many adults to save money by using a scooter instead of a car.
The Yamaha Virago is a choice for motorcyclists who prefer comfort and style over speed. While the Virago's seat height is relatively low, as befits a cruiser-styled motorcycle, shorter riders may still have to stand on the balls of their feet to support the motorcycle at a complete stop. There are several options to reduce the seat height, most of which involve replacing the shock absorbers and front fork springs with shorter aftermarket components. As an inexpensive and simpler alternative, the foam in the Virago's seat can be trimmed to effectively lower the rider's seating position.
Transporting a motorcycle on a truck or trailer bed without the proper tie-downs can be a dangerous undertaking. Side stands and center stands are incapable of supporting the bike during travel. The bike can fall over, damaging itself and the vehicle or trailer used to carry it; the bike also can fall out of the cargo bed, risking greater damage and liability for damaging other vehicles. Implement a tie-down system to transport your motorcycle safely.
Although modern motorcycle fuel lines are crafted with dual-layer construction to prevent the interior hose from minor damage the outer layer sustains, many dirt bike operators face damaged hoses following wrecks. Work on carburetors and fuel tanks can also damage a dirt bike’s gas line. Repairing a leaky gas line is one of the easiest motorcycle maintenance jobs and routine hose replacement is often included in an annual maintenance schedule, so most dirt bike riders should be comfortable replacing their gas line in order to save on shop fees.
In a departure from the more conventional biker ethos, law enforcement professionals who use motorcycles in the performance of their duties could be said to “Ride to Live, and Live to Keep Us Safe.” The winged wheel is a venerable emblem that represents that philosophy; it often is displayed as a patch sewn on an officer’s sleeve, or a metal pin worn above the name tag. The crest has become internationally recognized, albeit largely unofficially, as identifying police motorcycle units.
Motorcycle carburetors use a float-and-needle valve assembly to control the level of the fuel within the carburetor float bowl. The buoyancy of the float pushes up on the needle valve to close off the float bowl fuel inlet when the bowl is full, and prevents overfilling. Fuel height within the bowl is critical to maintaining the proper air-fuel ratio for the engine. Damage to the float can cause an improper fuel height and lead to a poor running condition. Inspect and test the float once the carburetor has been removed from the engine and the float bowl removed.
Motorcycle carburetors rely on a small plastic or brass float to control the flow of fuel from the gas tank. The float is held at the bottom of the carburetor within its own chamber. As the fuel levels rise, the float moves upward and closes the fuel valve. The float's height within the chamber must be set to a specific level to adequately feed the engine at all times.
People who wish to bike with additional speed and comfort often consider converting the bicycle's frame. Souping up a bike by converting it into a gas-powered scooter can be difficult or relatively easy. Several manufacturers offer bike conversion kits for purchase. Provided you have a the proper tools and mechanical expertise, you may also convert the bike without a kit.
Motorcycles require frequent cleaning regiments, since they constantly are exposed to the environment. Harsh UV light, moisture, road salt, mud, dust, tar, oils, oxidation, acid rain and other contaminants contribute to the deterioration of metals, plastics and rubber. Motorcycle tires endure the most punishment, since they have direct contact with water and caustic chemicals. Regular tire washing helps keep the rubber clean and chemical free. For those owners who wish to dress and blacken their motorcycle tires, a few techniques and precautions should be followed.
Modern motorcycle fuel tank interiors are chemically treated to coat the interior of the fuel tank and protect it from water and the effects of gasoline additives. Gasoline that has soured or evaporated produces a varnish on the inside of the tank. This varnish can peel off and clog the filter on the fuel petcock. Two-stroke engines that burn premixed oil and fuel may produce sludge in the tank that can cause persistent fuel filter clogging. Once drained and removed from the bike, clean the tank’s interior to remove sludge and varnish.
Devo is a name given to electric-powered mobility aid scooters used by people with limited ability to get around on their own. A big step up from a wheelchair, they offer disabled individuals a taste of freedom with ease and maneuverability. There are different types of devo scooters for different types of use. The one you choose depends largely on where you would like to go with it, in terms of its compactness and the type of terrain over which it will need to perform.
The 2003 Honda XR 100R motorcycle was part of the manufacturer’s popular XR series of single cylinder, four-stroke motocross bikes and was available in two trim levels. The XR 100R, which debuted in 1981, was the stripped-down off-road version. The 100L was a dual sport model with lights and street legal tires for public riding. By the late 1990s, the XR series boasted 10 versions. Production of the XR 100R ended in 2003.
Residential toilets are typically secured to the bathroom floor with two retaining bolts called tie down bolts. As with all bolts, these tie down bolts can stretch and in extreme cases even break over time. You may notice the toilet shifting slightly. Worn tie down bolts typically result in water leaking across the bathroom floor from under the base of the toilet. Although you must remove the toilet to replace the bolts, you do not have to disturb the toilet’s internal components.
A motorcycle's ability to change directions while maintaining straight-line stability is defined by a set of calculations referred to as the motorcycle's steering geometry. Extending the length of the motorcycle's frame or the rear swingarm will alter the wheelbase, or the distance between the front and rear axle. This creates improved stability while traveling in a straight line at the cost of side-to-side maneuverability.
To many motorcyclists, a gold or blue discoloration along the exhaust pipes can be an unsightly detraction from the appearance of the machine. This tarnished appearance is called "bluing," and while not necessarily harmful, it can be an indication of potential problems in the motorcycle's fuel settings.
Mongoose scooters are available in either motorized or non-motorized styles. The motorized versions use a small chain to connect the engine to the rear wheels, allowing the power-transfer needed for the forward movement on the scooter. When the chain is sagging and is unresponsive, change the chain to get the ride back to normal operating procedures.
If you like to work on motorcycles as much as you like to ride them, you should consider a motorcycle stand that picks the bike's engine up to a convenient work level. If you work on motorcycles a lot, a hand jacked or even pneumatic jacked stand doesn't compare to to an automatic stand. Automatic stands use an electric motor to run an air pump which lifts the stand. You don't need to buy one. All you need to do is add the right components to a typical scissor-lift type motorcycle stand.
Although you buy a motorcycle helmet with safety in mind, chances are you want to keep it looking great so you can ride in style. Even with proper care, scratches and scuffs are bound to happen. Trying to remove these scuff marks with the wrong type of product -- such as a petroleum-based cleaner -- could break down your helmet's properties, keeping it from fully protecting you. There are several ways to remove those marks without compromising your safety.
Establishing a motorcycle training school is much the same as starting an automobile driving school, but there are several differences. For instance, you will have to provide safety equipment, such as helmets, and will have to find instructors who have taken lengthy and sometimes expensive instructor courses specific to motorcycles. Your business and personal insurance will also vary from that purchased by auto driving schools, as will your licensing in many states. Still, the process is relatively straightforward and your business can be up and running within a month or so.
Also known as motocross racing, professional dirt bike racing is a competitive sport in which riders on motorized bicycles compete for prize money. This prize money contributes significantly to how professional dirt bike racers earn their salaries. Additional money may come through team sponsorships and the wealthiest riders can earn millions of dollars.
Hauling a dirt bike on a trailer is straightforward compared to getting the bike ready for the tow. The two key tasks in getting your bike ready to haul are elevating it onto the trailer bed and securing the bike in a stable upright position so it stays put during the ride. Many manufacturers design trailers to facilitate these tasks with accessories such as built-in ramps, low trailer height and brackets that secure your dirt bike wheels. Once your bike is loaded onto the trailer and secured in position, hauling is as simple as driving.
Unless the station where you fill your tank has a serious problem, water in your gas means that water has built up in your gas tank. This can cause a variety of symptoms, such as engine choking, stalling and accelerated corrosion of the gas tank and engine parts. The sooner you can diagnose the problem, the better. The best way to determine if water is in your gas is to look at the gas in your tank.
You probably don't have to return your buyer's money or take your motorcycle back after a sale if you don't want to. Depending on your state, your buyer might not have any recourse unless you lied about the motorcycle's condition. If not, the exchange of payment and paperwork completes the sale.
Transporting mattresses can be easy if you have a large moving truck or van. But smaller vehicles such as cars and SUVs can make moving a mattress more difficult unless you have a roof rack. With a roof rack you can secure a mattress and box spring to the car, but it is important to tie it down properly to keep it in place.
Draining the gas from a motorcycle dirt bike involves a few basic tools and knowing where the fuel line runs inside the motorbike. Once the specific line gets located, the job simply requires disconnecting the line and rerouting it to a container. The gas pours out with gravity and the tank gets drained. Then you can either remove the tank for repair work or refill it with fresh gasoline.
A dirt bike, or motocross, is a motorcycle designed for off-road use. It began in the UK in 1924 with the first race known as the Scrambles. Through the 1930s its popularity grew and it spread to North America. Most dirt bikes are not designed or equipped for use on public roads. To use your machine on a different trail system, you must trailer it to that location. Securing the bikes in the trailer properly assures they arrive undamaged.
Although the tail whip looks intimidating, performing this trick on a scooter isn't as difficult as you might think. The tail whip consists of a complete rotation of the board around the handlebars while in midair. It's a relatively basic scooter trick, but still impressive to viewers. Once you're ready to give it a shot, find a long, flat surface and put on your safety gear. With a little practice, you'll have the tail whip down in no time.
Attach any motorcycle hauler to the back of a car or truck by welding a hitch mount onto the hauler. A hitch mount is the same for haulers as for trailers. It's a piece of square metal tubing that fits right into the hitch of a vehicle and is secured by a metal pin. Build a hitch mount on any motorcycle hauler, by welding a piece of square metal tubing onto it and drilling a hole through it -- so it can be secured by the pin that came with the hitch on the vehicle.
The engine side cover on your motorcycle is made of shiny chrome but can become dirty from riding in the rain and picking up road film. Bugs fly into the side cover and then stick on it, creating black dots on the cover. Some substances are harder to clean off chrome than others, especially if you don’t have a good coat of chrome polish on your side cover. The polish repels many items so they simply brush off and do not stick to the finish.
A motorbike fork, found between the front wheel of a motorcycle and its frame, connects the front wheel and axle to the frame of the bike and allows the bike to be steered via the handlebars attached to the top clamp. This fork comes in various sizes depending on the type and size of motorcycle you have. These forks can become worn or damaged over time and can be stiffened to strengthen them. This involves removing all of the paint and giving them a strong new coat.
Yamaha's WR250F -- like most dirt bikes -- is designed to take some abuse. In spite of its toughness, it still needs to have the fork serviced periodically. Usually when forks are "rebuilt," it's really about changing the fork seals -- something that should be done if you see an increase in oil residue. But, once you have the forks apart, you can also replace or upgrade other components.
On a dirt bike motor, many problems may arise. If the problems are not fixed, the motor will get so bad that it will stop working altogether. Dirt bike motor builders make rebuild kits that make it easier to repair a motor. These kits come with all of the large parts that commonly fail on a dirt bike. This job takes more than a few hours, so take your time so that you do not mess up.
River rafting is exciting and provides a non-motorized way of floating down the watery pathways. One of the types of rafts uses a metal frame that is lashed to the raft itself. This is known as an oar boat. The captain sits in a special chair in the center of the frame and directs the raft downriver with two oars. Part of any river trip is rigging the raft itself, also known as the tie-down or lashing.
A fermentor is used in the production of beer and wine to change the sugars into alcohol. This process requires a sterile environment that is designed to keep outside air out while allowing gases to escape. Fermentors are commonly made from stainless steel, copper or glass containers. The inside of the fermentor is smooth to minimize areas where bacteria can grow and ruin the beverage. Because there is no location within a fermentor to tie something down, the only way to submerge it is with the right amount of ballast.
