by janette4 on 04/19/08 : Instead of using a household cleaner I use hand sanitizer to remove the candle wax residue. I comes off beautifully. And it shines up the container. I use hand sanitizer for alot of things. It is a great cleaner too. I also use it to shine the chrome fixtures in the kitchen and bath and use it to clean and shine my stove. by Sweeper on 07/21/08 : Just how many fireboxes(insdie of a fireplace) have you repaired this way anyhow. "Moderately easy"(???). You fail to mention, removing the old firebrick, which at this point, if they're that loose, should be replaced; that the mortar joints are only 1/8 inch which means mudding(mortaring) them in is way more diffucult and tedious then you make it sound; that since the joints are narrow one msut tuck point the remaining joints; and then you suggest conventional mortar(??) which will crack/deteriorate under high heat. Any mason whose built a firepalce knows to use a high-temp. refractory mortar. And exactly what is meant by, "if the mortar doesn't take", whattt?? ... more »   respond »
