Diets high in saturated fat are correlated with high incidence of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. coconut oil has medium-chain fatty acids that may increase the HDL / GOOD cholesterol however, whether the benefit of increasing the good cholesterol is higher than the risks of increasing the bad cholesterol remains to be seen. The American Heart Association recommends reduced consumption of saturated fats, including those found in coconut oil (until research confirms otherwise). My poor parents have been put on a barrage of drugs over the years, so that some of them are prescribed to "correct" the side effects of the first ones! They obediently take what their trusty md prescribes, only to find out later - OOPS! - that drug is bad for us! We have to wait for "extensive medical research" to catch up, I guess? Keep your mind open as you "practice" medicine. Medication should be the last resort, not the first. Nourishing Traditions might be a good read for all of us. ... more »   respond »
