I am a happily-married mother of three; a 3.5-year-old son and twins who just turned a year. I am employed by the WIC program as a breastfeeding counselor and I also do some work as a DONA-trained birth doula. I am passionate about birth and breastfeeding and feel strongly about the dissemination of correct information on these topics.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends one year *minimum* of breastfeeding, while the World Health Organization recommends two. During the first year, solid food is supplemental and should never replace a feeding of breastmilk. Solids should not be offered before 6 months of age, and only if Baby meets the developmental milestones necessary for tolerating solid foods (disappearance of tongue-thrust reflex, ability to sit unassisted, etc.). There is no "suggested limit for when to stop breastfeeding" - all medical organizations recommend continuing past 1-2 years for as long as is mutually desired by mother and child.
