I understand your position but I think that it is also important for parenting not to be *too* top down. You should be explaining the WHY behind each "rule" and discussing it. Think about it: would you want to follow rules if there were no reason for them? Also I think that its important to apply the rules equally to yourself if possible. If you tell kids to respect the property of others or to avoid name calling but then you break the very same rules with your spouse or others then they will just see it as hypocritical and why should they listen to a hypocrite?
