The spay/nueter law didnt pass because the majority of people in the state didnt agree with it. Yes there are many reasons for animals to be turned in and I do disaggree with your numbers. The vets in california disapproved of the spay/nueter law in overwhelming numbers. It was proven that instituting this law would have cost far more than it costs per household now. Instead of the Humane society and shelters and spca putting down these animals they should open limited kill shelters which by the way are working well in northern calif- sanfransico is a great example. Most of the animals killed are feral cats or dogs that are unredemable. All the laws needed are already in place and the cost of the Santa cruz Humane Society doing business per animal has gone up. The number of animals that are being put down in adjacent countys has gone down with out instituting these same programs. Melk more »

Very few Italian grayhounds end up in shelters- if they get there at all, they are scooped up and more than one family are there to claim it. Big black dogs are the ones that end up in shelters. more »

Many of the shelters esp those owned by Peta put down most of the animals that come into their shelters. One couple that worked for Peta put the animals down before they brought them back to the shelter, using a kill kit and then put them in black plastic bags before dumping them behind a building. They were finally arrested and didnt denie what they did. If more of the Humane society and spca shelters became limited kill shelters and became more creative in placing their animals the numbers would lower even more than they have in the last 10 yrs. These orgs have tons of money-most is spent on the management instead of the animals. Think before you get sucked into one of these organizations. It does depend on the people in charge at the individual shelters. Melk more »

I comb thur the coat, clean the blankets and put on a small amount of flea and tick application on the neck or back after a bath. I give a small bottle of Johnsons baby shampoo with each puppy I place. I have multiple dogs and have very little trouble with fleas and ticks in my house and yard. Very good suggestion about the baby shampoo. Melissa K. more »

If those opposed had been made up of mostly breeders levines law would have passed. There were many that were not involved in breeding at all that did not agree with what was being pushed in the state. Even if the law is changed , it wont pass because ultimately it will be to controversial for to many people. Levine pulled it because he didnt have the support and it would have failed if it had been voted on. This law isnt redemable. And of course Levine is going to put a good foot forward to those who want to write a article regarding this law and who he felt supported it. I know there has to be some changes, I just dont see it working if it isnt done with some amount of respect for the other side. And I dont see Levine and his group respecting any bodys opinion except his own. If I feel that way I am sure many of my counterparts also feel the same way. Melk more »

So what does HSUS do with the millions it raises using the furry faces of Fido and Fluffy? In 2002, the multi-million-dollar conglomerate gave less than $150,000 to hands-on humane societies and animal shelters. HSUS is reported to make about 113 million a yr. Melk more »

In Calif. @ 70% of the animals are fixed already. Most of the animals that are euthanized are feral cats and the dogs that are turned in are due to behavior problems-and this could be solved with free classes when the animals are originally adopted out. very few puppys are turned in. So alot are being brought up from Mexico and counted in those shelters numbers. Because of the big fight over the recent Law to spay and nueter all animals over 4 months- which by the way failed - alot of good info came out regarding these numbers. I lived and was a show breeder in Santa Cruz- The shelter didnt have problems finding homes for their dogs- the small amount they had. And they kept the irresponsible breeders in check and didnt bother the show breeders but went after the people who had mixed breed litters and put adds in the local newspaper. mk more »

I dont want to argue but I do want to give a different opinion on the subject. And the public choose to not support the spay/nuter bill so the public finally realized they did have alot to say about it. And the management does determine what programs they will support for the communities they are part of. Yes there are some horrible people breeding but there are many more who are trying to continue doing what they have a passion for and do it the right way. Many of the extra dogs are mutts that are running the country side. I too am upset with the puppy mills where the animals are treated so horribly. And my position on Peta hyjacking a subject that the ordinary person is already becoming more aware of is just that. It takes a community to raise the consciousness , not one group- it is all happening-and it will happen with or without Peta. No body needs Peta for anything-melk more »

continued- nobody needs Peta for anything , because Peta hyjacks a movement and makes it their own. Money would be better spent going to the SPCA but even there it is much better to go to your local Humane society or a local breed club that rescues a certain breed, so you actually see what happens with your money. When a org gets as big as some your money gets lost. I am not in the dark, I understand to well what you are talking about and dont believe it is a positive outlet for anyone. As time goes on, Peta wont be able to fool anyone anymore. MELK more »
