by Sweeper on 07/21/08 : Apparently we're instructing here how to install a gas insert, in which case ussing double or tripe wall chimney, as instructions suggest, is completely WRONG, as well as not to code, and UNSAFE. The suggested type chimeny is only for wood burning appliances. A gas insert requires a length of flexible chimney(flue) liner, designed speciffically for a gas appliance, which connects to the gas insert and is run through the EXISTING chimney flue(inner part of chimney); sealed off at the top with a top plate and a proper gas vent cap isntalled. If these instructions are for a wood burning insert, and as the photos would suggest the existing freplace uses a framed "chase" around existing pre-fab metal pipe which, again as demonstrated by the framed chase would be connected to a Zero Clearance F.P.(pre-fab built unit), then one is in for a surprise if one attempts installing a wood insert in th ...

Well done article. We just did this job on our kitchen windows a few months ago, using new thermo pane ones for replacements. Self Adhesive flashing applied to the new frame helps to seal out air & moisture.
