Oops! Pardon my typos! What's in parentheses should read, ("BOB"--an d there's a new one that has more torso/below the waist).

What's with the word "and"? This happened twice.

I remember when I took Taekwondo when I was younger that the step side kick had the stepping leg land in front of the kicking leg, then the kicking leg rose up to a srike with the blade of the foot. The text by the grandmaster had photos of doing it exactly that way of stepping, so I wasn't being shown an unapproved way. In Soo Bahk Do, the way is as Chemin does, stepping behind, and it appears that the flat of the foot is striking, but it's really using the heel for concentrated impact. It was easy to drop using the blade of the foot, but it takes practice to put the power into the heel. I did notice that Chemin raises her kicking leg much as I tend to do, almost roundhouse-prep, although she hits the target ("BOB"--an d there's a new one that has more torso/below the wqaist) just right. My instructor emphasizes a more "hanging" lower leg when the kicking leg is raised, which I've seen in photos and on other videos. I'm wondering, though, if that's more of the approved form in practice than what happens for speed in free sparring or a real situation.

Reviewing the video, she points from the instep to the lower shin. I think she prefers the instep without saying it, but she's showing that that larger area is "roundhouse approved." Logisitics, in sparring or a real situation, can't always be so precise as the instep, so I guess training to hit over the whole range of the striking area is the way to go.

I noticed that Chemin doesn't say "instep," but refers to the area between your ankle and shin. I wonder if she studied any Muay Thai? She also throws her body into the roundhouse, which is the only way I've been able to do it with control; if I do it against air, I can't really throw my hip/body into it, and stopping in mid-air has me wrestling with balance more so than against a target.
