Vigorous rectal massage also works. There is a paper on this. You can find it with an internet search--see Ig Noble Prize. (It stimulates the vagus nerve.)

When I was an undergraduate (molecular biology/biochemistry) I worked for 18 months at the McArdle Oncology Research laboratories in Madison, WI. The facility offered graduate student and professorial presentations as parts of the curriculum and these were open to anyone who was interested in learning about the work being done.
