Steps 1-5 work for me. But, to switch it up a bit, try steaming the artichokes with balsamic vinegar and dried herbs in the water, which will provide the leaves with a little extra flavor. I steam them for 25-45 minutes, depending on how large the artichoke is (you can test to see if they're done by poking the bottom with a fork; if it slides in and out, it's done). Finally, to add a little additional flavor, I dip the leaves in a pesto/mayo mix. It's delish!!
