If a horse's hooves were too weak to withstand constant pounding, would they in fact still exist? Properly trimmed and conditioned hooves are a marvel unto themselves, and horses the world over are able to perform at high levels barefoot. Perfect example- the Lipizzaner Stallions at the world renowned Spanish Riding School in Vienna.

  • Comment by other95 on The Safest Heartworm Medicine for Collies on Dec 06, 09

Actually *all* the heartworm meds can cause problems for dogs with the mdr1 mutation if they are given at the higher doses. It's just that ivermectin is the one drug mostly used at the higher dose, thus you see more reactions to it. In general though, dogs with this mutation are given Interceptor. For a list of problem drugs, see this link: http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts-VCPL/drugs.aspx Interceptor at a lower dose (roughly 1/5 the dose) is the Safeheart dose, approved by the FDA for heartworm prevention, but not marketed here, is probably the safest alternative. Your vet can modify the dosage appropriately. The link for that can be found here: http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/Products/ApprovedAnimalDrugProducts/FOIADrugSummaries/ucm054862.htm

I recommend a 75g for a single oscar and a small tankmate, a 50g will only let them grow to an Average size when they should be growing to "full size"
