If you live in an older building with hardwood floors, please, please please....put down some area rugs. Not only will the people who live downstairs from you not want to strangle you, but the rugs will also attenuate the noise coming from *their* apartment into yours. Plus, you're violating your lease (usually) if you do not have anywhere from 70-80% of your floors covered.
Or, at the very least, take your shoes off!
But even then, some noise is inevitable. Welcome to urban living!
