by Michael Motta on 07/23/08 : thebeef, thanks for your remarks. What it seems like you're doing is collapsing the distinction between practical and theoretical knowledge because you're using historical effects of religion as supports for an argument for theoretical atheism. In other words, you're using the negative effects of religion in order to make an argument against the existence of god. What this boils down to to me is a form of pragmatism that says something's true if it works and false if it doesn't. I think you're saying religion hasn't worked (to improve the lot of man) so it must be false, ergo atheism is true. I think there are problems in this argument and that it would be stronger if used as an argument against particular religious practices than against the existence of god(s). by thebeef on 07/22/08 : Good article. However, a reason to choose atheism rather than agnosticism is that religion may be an institution that ultimately damages society, and should be resisted. By compromising intellectual thought, standing in the way of reason and scientific progress, and establishing itself as a wedge to be used for selfish political purposes, religion should perhaps be viewed as a damaging force and not something that is deserving of theoretical toleration. By looking at religion and its historical conflicts as well as hypocrisies, there is ample justification to be found for defending a 'theoretical atheism' in addition to a practical atheism. ...

Nice article but Appalachian State beat Michigan aka the University of Michigan Wolverines, NOT Michigan State, aka the Michigan State University Spartans. As of 11/09/07 the article title is "How to Win and How Appalachian State Football Team Beat Michigan State Football Team at The Big House" and in Step 5 it says "APPALACHIAN STATE FOOTBALL completed the listed step on OCT 1, 2007 which allow them to defeat no. 5 rank Michigan State football team . . .".

You're welcome. Yes history still stands, and as a Spartan, I prefer that it remain standing down the road in Ann Arbor. :) Step 5 still says "Michigan State" by the way.
