If you have a digital or polaroid camera you can set up a silly photo booth. Have an artistic person draw bodies on cardboard and cut out the face (mermaid, clown, gorilla...). Kids stick their face through the hole and say cheese! more »

Most importantly get support for yourself. To great sites are www.radzebra.org and the special needs forum at http://www.adoption.com/. These children cannot be "cured" by love and patience (although these are necessities) and they will manipulate, triangulate, lie and can destroy a family. We believe teens need lots of hugs! I tell my kids they need one hug per year of age. That means my 14 year old son needs 14 hugs daily. I think people hug the child less as they get older and this is the opposite of what they need! As the president of an industrial design consulting firm, I can tell you I do not hire designers without a degree in industrial design. No substitutions! We do also employ graphic designers and mechanical engineers - but we prefer to hire designers with ADDITIONAL experience in those or manufacturing not other degrees alone. Of course as a consultancy we have to have high standards of efficiency and excellence. Mary www.id-one.net more »

This article has good information. As the president of an industrial design firm, I believe this is a good first step toward getting your products to fly off the shelves. Mary www.id-one.net more »

One additional way of making sure your product is ready to market and going to fly off the shelves is to have it designed by an industrial design firm. They can research trends and consumer needs, and give your product a unique look that will help distinguish you from your competition. They also will have an eye toward manufacturability and can save you quite a bit of money making sure your product is produced as cost-efficiently as possible while maintaining aesthetics. Many times they will have access to information/ vendors that can help you reach your goals. Mary President ID-ONE Austin www.id-one.net more »

If you like the design side of being a product engineer - don't forget to take some art/ design courses. You might also consider a career as an industrial designer where you have more freedom to "think outside the box." Mary President ID-ONE, Austin www.id-one.net more »
