I recently quit playing golf. I quit mostly because I could not hit a golf ball far enough. I could not reach 400+ yard par 4s in 2, which is standard. There are some games some people can't play. I can't dunk therefore I can never be in a dunk contest. I can't hit a baseball 300 feet. Therefore I can't play Homerun Derby. I can't hit a golf ball 200 yards. Yes I can still golf, but I have no chance of being good.

I took up golf in my 20s after years of playing various other sports. As with almost all sports, there seems to be a belief in too many people that practice and dedication will make any person a good athlete in his selected sports. The farthest I could hit a golf ball was somewhere short of 200 yards on the carry. Generally speaking, that is simply not far enough to post anything more than mediocre scores. I had various golf instructors look at my swing and after a sufficient amount of study, none could come up with the magic cure for slow hand speed. Finally one person suggested I play shorter courses whenever possible. That was the best advice I got. Now, several years later, I'll be on the course with a group of strangers and one will say, "Nothing personal, but you look like you should hit the ball a lot farther." Yeah, and Charles Manson looks like Jesus too.
