by randomfella on 07/23/08 : Here are things that will make all the difference: (1) graduating from a top-3 law school (Harvard, Stanford or Yale); (2) having a proven track record of publication in serious academic law reviews; (3) having a Ph.D in an ancillary field; (4) having a federal Court of Appeals or Supreme Court clerkship (although this is not as important as it once was); (5) having excellent grades; (6) having served as an editor on your law school's primary law review (although this, also, is not as important as it once was); & (7) having well-known professors who are willing to recommend you enthusiastically to their peers. Finally, EVERY accredited law school - whether Harvard or elsewhere - will be looking at your academic record and achievements while in law school. ...

by randomfella on 07/23/08 : I'm sorry, but a lot of this advice is seriously flawed. Here are things that absolutely will not help: (1) getting an MBA, (2) becoming a member of one bar as opposed to another, (3) getting substantial legal experience (although this seems strange - and some post-graduation seasoning is attractive - law schools don't care much about practical experience beyond 2 or 3 years; also, if you practice too long - beyond 4 or 5 years - it will start to be held against you); & (4) writing for a professional legal writing magazine (these are NOT scholarly law reviews and will give the author no help at all on the market). Also, very few people get law teaching jobs by applying directly to schools - the AALS holds a "meat market" in DC once a year where all the law schools meet all the applicant.
