Houses can be kept in good shape with regular maintenance.

The value of a home can change largely over time. Homes that are maintained well retain and even gain value, while those that are ignored can depreciate in terms of their overall worth. You can complete many different maintenance tasks around the house without costly professional assistance. Household maintenance tips help homeowners keep their dwellings in good condition and at the height of their value. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Insulation

    • To avoid getting high utility bills, it is important to make sure your home is kept properly insulated all year. In the winter, quality insulation can prevent cold air from making its way inside. Check all the doors in windows in a home to make sure extra air is not seeping through. Storm doors are a good way to protect against the outside elements. Additionally, check all of the frames surrounding windows and doors for weak spots, cracks and holes that may be letting in air or precipitation. Install insulation for all pipes in the attic to make sure they are protected from cold weather. Ensure that the roof is insulated well so that inside temperatures do not get excessively cold in the winter or warm during the summer.

    Safety

    • Another way to keep a house regularly maintained is to follow safety tips. Always make sure that appliances, ovens, and stoves are turned off when they are not being used to reduce the chance of fire. Clean out the lint trap and ducts attached to dryers so that they do not incur any electrical problems. If you have a chimney, make sure to clean it annually to prevent buildup. Sometimes you will need to hire a trained professional to clean your chimney. For homes that use wood to fuel their heating source, make sure the wood is kept above ground and away from the structure of the home. Check all gutters frequently to protect against water damage in the home.

    Humidity Levels

    • The humidity of a home must be maintained at a healthy level to ensure the home remains in optimal living condition. Homes that are too dry may feel cold and uncomfortable in the winter, while too much humidity can lead to strange smells and damp spots strewn across a house. Make sure to invest in a humidifier and dehumidifier to cope with different levels throughout changing weather. According to Michigan State University, humidity levels should hover between 30 percent and 50 percent indoors.
