The Mustang GT, or Grand Touring, has been one of the favored muscle cars put out by Ford Motor Company for decades. With first production beginning in the 1960s, there are numerous models available for either restoration or complete customization. Depending upon the model and the desired look, there are at least as many wheel types as there are model years. Ranging from classic to aggressive, whatever look you're trying to achieve, there's a wheel for it.
The standard rim size for most Mustang GTs is 16 inches. Rim sizes range from 16 to 20 inches, with differences in performance, quality of ride and style for each. In general, larger rims provide better handling while sacrificing ride quality. The exception is when you reach 20-inch rims, which exist solely for looks, as they tend to reduce both handling and ride quality.
Wheel widths range in size from 8 to 10.5 inches. The greater the wheel width, the more surface contact a car's tire maintains with the road, allowing for greater handling. The standard wheel width for Mustang GTs is 8 inches. The front tires may be resized to 9 inches, offering a slight change in the vehicle's driving, but 9-inch wheels require new tires to account for the greater width. Wheels measuring 10 to 10.5 inches wide are available for the rear tires, giving the car a more aggressive look and greater traction.
Different color options commonly provided by wheel manufacturers include not only base metallic colors, but a variety of finishes as well. A shiny chrome wheel could provide your Mustang GT with a classic, polished look. A hypercoated wheel, one which is painted, polished and finished with a metallic clear coat, changes colors depending on lighting and viewing angle and could provide your GT with a futuristic look.
With a huge variety of options, including number, size and shape of spokes, whether or not the spokes are deep set within the wheel, and even number and placement of lug nuts, wheel styles can accommodate any look. Most manufacturers offer reproductions of famous wheel styles, their own creations and also a custom wheel option. Custom wheel creation allows you to achieve the look and effect you want.
