Glastron was founded in 1956 by former aeronautical engineer Bob Hammond, Texas boat dealer Bill Gaston and their young employee, Mel Whitley. The company's name came from Hammond's wife's idea of combining the "Glas" of fiberglass with "Tron," a futuristic sounding word. 1965 saw the company produce 15 different models, powered by a mixture of OMC, Mercruiser and Volvo engines. All models came with fused safety switches.
The Skiflite 142 model had a centerline of 14 feet 2 inches, a gunwale length of 15 feet 5 inches and beam, trans-width and depth of 65 inches, 61 inches and 29 inches, respectively. The boat had an approximate weight load of 396 lbs. and had a maximum power output of 50 horsepower. The deck color of this model was aqua.
The centerline of the Jetflite V-143 was 2 inches shorter at 14 feet, but its gunwale length of 15 feet 7 inches was 2 inches longer. This model had a 68-inch beam, a trans-width of 64 inches and a depth of 28 inches. This model could carry a load of approximately 505 lbs. The boat had a maximum power output of 65 hp and came with a metallic-red deck.
Futura V150, Futura Sedan V-152, Fireflite V-155
These three models shared center lengths of 15 feet 4-1/2 inches, gunwale lengths of 16 feet 9 inches and beams that were 72 inches long. Their trans-widths and depths were all 67 and 32 inches, respectively. All three models shared the 90 hp maximum power output and 580-lb. weight limit. The V-150 had a brown deck, the Sedan had a gold-colored deck and the Fireflite V-155 had an aqua deck.
Thunder Jet V-160, Bayflite Deville V-163
The Thunder Jet and Bayflite models both had a centerline length of 16 feet-1/2 inch, a gunwale length of 17 feet and a beam length of 80 inches. They also shared a trans-width of 73 inches, a depth of 32 inches and a maximum power output of 100 hp. The Thunder Jet's metallic-red deck set it apart from the Bayflite's gold-colored deck. Both models had a maximum load weight of 685 lbs.
Futura 500 V-164
The centerline of the Futura 500 was 16 feet 5 inches, its gunwale length was 17 feet 8 inches and it had a beam length, a trans-width and a depth of 72, 67 and 32 inches respectively. The 500 had a maximum weight load of 1220 lbs. It came with metallic-red deck coloring.
Sportsman V171, Crestflite V-172, Crestflite Stern Drive V-174
These three models shared 17 feet 3 inch centerlines, 18 feet 10-inch gunwales and 79-inch beams. The Sportsman and the V-172 Crestflite both had a maximum power output of 100 hp. The Stern Drive had a maximum load of 1550 lbs., compared to a maximum of 860 lbs. for the regular Crestflite and 810 lbs. for the Sportsman. Both Crestflites had brown deck coloring, whereas the Sportsman's deck was aqua.
Sportsman V-191, Gulfcruiser V-194
The Sportsman V-191 also came with aqua deck coloring. It shared its centerline of 18 feet 7 inches, gunwale of 20 feet 2 inches and beam of 90 inches with the Gulfcruiser V-195. The two models also shared trans-widths and depths of 83 inches and 54 inches, respectively. The Sportsman had a maximum power output of 170 hp and carried a maximum load of 1170 lbs. The Gulfcruiser carried 2130 lbs. and came with gold deck coloring.
Larger Glastron Models
The Caribbean V-234 (with its centerline of 23 feet 4 inches, gunwale of 24 feet 11 inches and beam of 96 inches) was the largest of the Glastron boats produced in 1965. This model also had a trans-width of 88 inches and a depth of 53 inches. Close behind was the slightly smaller Gulfstream V-204, which had a 20-foot center-line, 21-foot gunwale and a 90-inch beam. The Gulfstream also boasted a trans-width of 85 inches and a depth of 47 inches. The Caribbean's maximum load of 2600 lbs. considerably outweighed the Gulfstream's 1960. The Caribbean had a brown-colored deck, while the Gulfstream had a gold-colored deck.
