There are a lot of different places to look for grants. Governments at the federal, state and local level often give out grants to help non-profit organizations or members of minority groups to succeed. Non-profit organizations and foundations may also give out grants to small non-profit entities or to individuals. Women attempting to start a small business in Kentucky are eligible for a number of grants, depending on the focus of their business and whether they are in the process of launching it or are already established.
Women in Art
For artists attempting to establish themselves as successful businesswomen in the art world, the Kentucky Foundation for Women has two grant options. First, women who wish to develop their artistic skill can seek a grant that will allow them to do that while also creating art that encourages social change. The second option is for women who wish to take art activities to the community. Again, the activities must focus on encouraging social change. Both grants give women artists the opportunity to begin establishing themselves as professional artists, so that they will be better positioned to succeed in the art industry. Each program awards $100,000 in grant money annually, though the money may be distributed to multiple recipients.
Women and Health
Women whose business focus is on promoting better health within the Louisville, Ky., community can apply for a grant through the local government. To receive a Louisville mini-grant, you must design a project or event that will help get members of the community more active or more involved with choosing better nutrition. This grant is a perfect fit for women starting small businesses in the health industry who want to make community involvement a core value of their business and who want to establish a reputation in their field. Mini-grants totaling $50,000 are awarded annually, distributed to multiple recipients.
General Business Grants
General business grants are geared toward women business owners. Two such grants in Kentucky come from the Amber Grant and the Women’s Financial Fund. The Amber Grant gives small grants to assist women with business start-up costs. Grants are typically between $500 and $1,000. The Women’s Financial Fund gives grants to women seeking to start a business or find additional funding for an existing business. Grants range from $1,000 to $5,000.
