Problems With Kingsdown Mattresses

Kingsdown mattresses are largely innerspring mattresses, which use wire coils for support. The problems associated with the Kingsdown mattress are mainly those associated with all innerspring mattresses: sagging, dust mites, back pain and rolling. Customer satisfaction for all innerspring mattresses, according to the sleep product research organization Sleep Like The Dead, is 61 percent. Among inner spring mattresses, Kingsdown has a 60 percent satisfaction rate, falling below Sealy Posturepedic, Serta and Simmons Beautyrest and above Stearns & Foster and Spring Air.

Overall Problems

  • While many Kingsdown mattress owners love the product, those who have bought the less expensive models complain of the most problems. Kingsdown mattress prices range from $800 to $3,000, and the models that sell for less than $1,000 have the most problems.

  • The major problem reported in Kingsdown mattresses is premature sagging, defined as depressions in the mattress within the first three years of purchase. According to Sleep Like The Dead, 34 percent of Kingsdown customers complain of premature sagging. Among the various mattress manufacturers, this is one of the highest rates of complaints of premature sagging.

Dust Mites

  • Dust mites appear in many innerspring mattresses because of their cellular and fibrous construction. The skin shreds of mites are believed to cause asthma and hay fever. Some Kingsdown mattress owners rank their dust mite condition as "poor."

Pain and Rolling

  • According to the Best Mattress Buying Guide, some Kingsdown mattress owners report problems with back and shoulder pain. Rolling toward the center of the mattress when a sleeping partner is heavier is also sometimes cited as a problem. This is likely due to poorer construction of the inner coils.
