List of Advanced Technology Wood Stoves

Wood stoves are visually exciting options for providing supplemental heat to homes. While the earliest wood stoves consisted simply of chambers for containing the wood and flames, included shafts or vents for channeling the resulting smoke outside and had doors for gaining access to the flames, many modern wood-burning stoves utilize more advanced technologies. These technologies help increase the efficiency of wood stoves and may also offer other benefits.

    1. Fireview Soapstone Wood Stove

      • A product of the Woodstock Soapstone Company, the Fireview Soapstone Wood Stove consists of natural soapstone, which is a soft, talc-based rock that can absorb and radiate heat without becoming hot to the touch. According to Galt Technology, the Fireview stove can produce up to 55,000 British thermal units (BTUs) of heat per hour and is capable of heating spaces with dimensions of 1,600 square feet. One of the stove's standout features is its airwash technology, which helps prevent tar, ash and soot from accumulating on the stove's dual-paned glass viewing window. As Stoves Online notes, airwash technology functions by taking in air from above the viewing window and "washing" or passing it over the window's surface, which creates a continuous, protective layer of air that blocks out particles. To prevent wood fuel from disrupting this layer of air, the Fireview stove utilizes decorative andirons, which are metal supports that hold wood in place.

      Lopi Liberty Wood Stove

      • As Galt Technology notes, the Lopi Liberty Wood Stove has the best Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rating of any wood stove and only releases 2.6 g -- or about 0.006 lbs. -- of emissions each hour. The cast iron stove can produce 74,300 BTUs of heat per hour and can heat spaces between 1,500 and 2,500 square feet in size. The efficiency of the Lopi Liberty stems in part from its distinctive step-top or two-tiered design, which helps channel convective heat out into interior spaces. The design also channels radiant heat to the top of the stove, which allows you to use the stove's top as a cooking surface. Other advanced features of the Lopi Liberty include a single control for adjusting airflow and an optional outside air kit, which pulls in fresh air from outside for increasing combustion efficiency.

      Windsor High Efficiency Wood Stove

      • A product of Monessen Hearth Systems, the Windsor High Efficiency Wood Stove is available in three different sizes, the largest of which can produce 32,300 BTUs and is capable of heating spaces up to 2,000 square feet. The stove has cast iron legs; a cast iron door; and a chamber -- or firebox -- that consists of cast steel. Like the Fireview, the Windsor wood stove utilizes advanced, airwash technology for keeping its viewing window clean. Other advanced features of the stove include convective side panels for directing heat out into interior spaces and a removable ash drawer, which allows you to easily remove debris from the stove's interior.
