1999 4Runner Bolt Torque Specifications

by John Stevens J.D.

The 1999 Toyota 4Runner was equipped with either the 2.7 liter four-cylinder engine or with the 3.4 liter six-cylinder engine. Each engine has its own torque specifications. "Torque," in this context, refers to the amount of force necessary to turn a fastener, whether a bolt or a nut. Following the appropriate torque specifications closely is important to avoid serious engine damage upon major engine reassembly.

Cylinder Head

Tighten the cylinder head fasteners on the 2.7 liter engine in five intervals. First tighten the fasteners to 10 ft.-lb. of torque. Tighten the fasteners a second time to 20 ft.-lb. of torque. Tighten the fasteners a third time to 29 ft.-lb. of torque. Tighten all fasteners 90 degrees, and tighten the fasteners an additional 90 degrees.

Note that cylinder head on the 3.4 liter engine features two types of head bolts, recessed bolts and 12-point bolts. Tighten the 12-point bolts before the recessed bolts. Tighten the 12-point bolts in five intervals. First tighten the bolts to 10 ft.-lb. of torque. Tighten the bolts again to 20 ft.-lb. of torque. Tighten the bolts again to 25 ft.-lb. of torque, then tighten each bolt an additional 90 degrees. Finally, tighten each bolt 90 degrees again, and tighten the recessed bolts to 13 ft.-lb. of torque.

Intake Manifold

Tighten the intake manifold fasteners on the 2.7 liter engine to 22 ft.-lb. of torque. Tighten all intake manifold fasteners on the 3.4 liter engine to 13 ft.-lb. of torque.

Exhaust Manifold

Tighten all exhaust manifold fasteners to 36 ft.-lb .of torque on the 2.7 liter engine, and to 30 ft.-lb. of torque on the 3.4 liter engine.

Crankshaft Caps

Tighten all crankshaft cap fasteners to 29 ft.-lb. of torque on the 3.4 liter engine, and tighten each fastener an additional 90 degrees. Tighten all crankshaft cap fasteners to 45 ft.-lb. of torque on the 3.4 liter engine, and tighten each fastener an additional 90 degrees.

Rod Caps

Tighten all rod cap fasteners to 33 ft.-lb. of torque on the 2.7 liter engine, and tighten each fastener an additional 90 degrees. Tighten all rod cap fasteners to 18 ft.-lb. of torque on the 3.4 liter engine, and tighten each fastener an additional 45 degrees.
