1985 Nissan Pickup Specs

by Steve Johnson

In 1985, Nissan released one of the last members of its fifth generation of pickup trucks, the Nissan 720. This particular vehicle came in two trims and was one of the more popular pickup trucks during its release. The 720 generation was first released in 1980, when it succeeded the 620 pickup. It was replaced by the Hardbody pickup in 1987.

Models and Trims

The Nissan 720 pickup was available in two basic body designs; the Regular Cab and the King Cab. Other body variations included the Sport Truck (ST) and DeLuxe (DX), but the King Cab was the top-seller. Truck beds were available as regular or base types and extended- or long-bed types. The 1985 Nissan pickup was offered in two-wheel-drive (2WD) and four-wheel-drive (4WD) versions.

Engine and Performance

The base engine for the 1985 Nissan pickup was a 2.4-liter carbureted single overhead camshaft (SOHC) Z24 with a rated power of 103 horsepower at 4,800 rpm and a torque of 134 foot-pounds at 2,800 rpm. It used a computer-controlled carburetor as its main fuel system, but a fuel injection system was also introduced late in 1985 with the modified Z24i engine. Standard transmission was a five-speed manual, with an option for a three-speed automatic.

Chassis, Features and Pricing

The 1985 Nissan pickups came standard with 28-inch 215/75R15 tires, an independent front A-arm suspension with torsion bars, and a leaf spring type rear suspension. It also came standard with front disc brakes and rear drum brakes.

The 1985 Nissan 720 models were released with redesigned hoods and smoother sided beds with removable tailgates. Bed designs of the earlier models had problems with welded seams that were exposed and prone to corrosion. The truck's dash pod featured new round-shaped meters and gauges. Most 720 models had dash pods with no tachometers and clocks, but some were released with standard voltage and oil pressure gauges. As of 2010, used 1985 Nissan 720 trucks cost around $1,695 to $2,245, while the King Cab design ranges from $2,200 to $2,800.
