From its introduction in 1957, the Sportster has remained a best-seller for the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. For the 2001 model-year, there are two Sportster 1200s: the Custom and Sport. They both feature high-ratio cam gears for quieter operation than earlier models. The 1200 Custom design is based on appearance and style; the 1200S Sport offers enhanced performance.

Powertrain

At the heart of both the Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200S Sport and Custom is a 73-cubic inch, or 1,200 cc, air-cooled engine driven by a five-speed transmission with final belt drive. The fuel system utilizes a carburetor, and the fuel capacity is 3.3 gallons. Both models are built for performance; however, the Sport has a slight but significant power edge due to advanced performance features. It produces 70.8 foot-pounds of torque at 3,000 RPM while the Custom generates 64.2 foot-pounds at 3,900 RPM. The Custom's top speed is 106.9 MPH, and the Sport can go up to 108.7 MPH. Bore and stroke are 3.5 inches by 3.81 inches for both the Custom and Sport. The compression ratio is 10:1 for the Custom and 9:1 for the Custom.

The Custom Sportster has 4.1 inches of front suspension travel and 2.1 inches in the rear. The front and rear brakes are single discs. The Sport model has 6.1 inches of front suspension travel and 3.1 inches in the rear. The front brakes are dual discs, and the rear brakes are single disc. The Sport features 13-spoke wheels on the front and rear. The Custom features a 21-inch front laced wheel and a 16-inch rear disc wheel.
