The V-Star is Yamaha's classic motorcycle make. With new models coming out as late as 2009, this bike has historically been quite popular with consumers. In 2002, Yamaha came out with an 1,100 cc V-Star that users rated particularly well on rankings website Power Sports Network. Both the XVS1100 and XVS1100A V-Star trims from 2002 featured the same oil specifications.

Types

The 2002 1,100 cc V-Star could take five different kinds of engine oil, though Yamaha recommended certain oil types for different operating temperatures. It recommended SAE 10W-30 oil for the coolest climates, with temperatures between 14 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Yamaha recommended SAE 20W 50 for the warmest climates, between 32 and 122 degrees Fahrenheit. Other engine oil options included SAE 10W-40, 15W 40, and 20W-40. This motorcycle also took two different kinds of gear oil: hypoid SAE 80 (API GL4) or multi-grade hypoid SAE W-90.

Oil and Filter Changes

2002 V-Star owners were required to change the engine oil approximately once every 6,000 miles for optimum performance. For gear oil, it was only necessary to change the oil once every 12,000 miles. Additionally, Yamaha recommended that the engine oil filter be replaced every 12,000 miles.

Periodic Checks

Yamaha also recommends that you check engine oil and final gear oil prior to every ride, to make sure that there is both an adequate amount and that there are no leaks. If a leakage is present, Yamaha instructs riders to refrain from riding and to take the motorcycle for repairs from an accredited Yamaha dealer.
