Regular checking and adjustment of wheel alignment angles on your Toyota Camry will save you money in gas and tires over the life of your tires. Tires that are in proper alignment will run truer and wear evenly across the tread instead of showing abnormal wear patterns. Wear patterns that indicate alignment issues are wearing on one side only of the tread or irregular wearing of the inner or outer edge of the tread. There are three alignment angles that can be checked and adjusted on your Camry: caster, camber and toe angle.

Camber Angle Description And Specification

Camber is the angle off the vertical at which your tire sits at rest when a straight vertical line is drawn through the center line of your tire. If the camber angle is out of adjustment, the inner or outer edges of the tire will wear abnormally. With excessive negative camber angles, the upper side of the tire will be angled inwards and the inner portion of the tread will be wearing more quickly than the rest of the tire. Excessive positive camber will be exhibited by excessive wear on the outer edge of the tread due to the excessive outward lean of the upper edge of the tire. For the fourth-generation Toyota Camry, the camber specification is -1.4 degrees to 0.02 degrees. Camber angle is usually adjusted using a rotating camber eccentric bolt on the MacPherson strut.

Toe Angle Description and Specification

Toe angle is the inward or outward turning of your tires in relation to a horizontal line drawn through the center line of your car. Incorrect toe angle causes a tire wear pattern known as scrubbing. This is where the inner or outer edge of the tire is worn in patches with high spots and low spots. Proper toe angle for the Toyota Camry is between -0.1 degree and 0.1 degree. Toe angle is adjusted by loosening and turning the tie rod adjusting sleeves under your car. There are two adjusting sleeves on your Camry: one on the passenger side and one on the driver side.

Caster Angle Description and Specification

Caster is the angle between the vertical and the angle at which the pivot axis of the front suspension, either between the ball joints on the control arms or the lower ball joint and the upper strut mount. Excessive camber will exhibit itself by requiring excessive steering input and sometimes by excessive inner tread wear. Proper caster angles assist the front wheels in returning to the at rest straight ahead position. The specification for caster angle is between 1.4 and 2.9 degrees.

Rear Camber

Most tire and alignment shops will check the alignment angles of all four wheels. However, your Camry, unless a camber adjusting kit is installed, won’t have adjustable rear camber. The specification range for rear camber is between -1.5 degrees and 0.1 degrees.

Rear Toe Angle

Similar to front toe angle, rear toe angle describes the angle between the horizontal center line of your car and the angles that your rear tires are off this center line. The acceptable range for rear toe is between 0.2 and 0.6 degrees.
