Microsoft Word is a word processing program, yet it can be used to perform basic mathematical functions. The end result of a multiplication problem is referred to as the “product." When using Microsoft Word to multiply numbers, you will need to remember this terminology. Once your Word Document is open, you can instruct the program to multiply numbers.

Create a table, such as one with one number in each of the first two columns. Highlight the cell where you want the product of the two numbers to appear.

Click “Layout” from the horizontal menu bar at the top of the screen. Select “Formula” on the right side of the menu bar when it appears.

Click the arrow to the right of “Paste function” to open a drop-down menu and select “Product.” After completing this step, “=PRODUCT( )” will appear on the top line of the Formula menu, with the cursor between the parenthesis.

You will also need to choose which cells are being multiplied, such as to the left of the cell, to the right, above or below. For example, your formula might look like "=PRODUCT(LEFT)" or "=PRODUCT(ABOVE)" depending on which cells you want multiplied.

You can also select the number of decimal points or format you want your product to appear as.

Click “OK,” and the Formula menu will close. The answer to the multiplication problem will appear in your document at the location of your cursor.
