Use old doors to make photo frames.

Photo displays present the opportunity to create a design statement in your home that goes beyond the photograph itself. In a modern home, you can eschew traditional frames and choose unexpected design elements that will add to the style and character of your home. Look for colors and textures that work with the existing design to showcase your favorite shots. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Wire Photo Wall

    • For a streamlined photo display that works with the clean, simple lines of a modern home, use wire. Designate a wall for the display and install lines of heavy-duty wire across the width; use simple hooks to keep the wire level. Mount photographs on thin aluminum sheets that are cut to the same size, and install metal rings at the top two corners. Slide the wire through the hoops and move the photo to its place along the wire. For a more funky look, you can use photos in different sizes along a single line, or look for mounting material in various finishes.

    Painted Frames

    • For a surprising and unexpected way to hang photos on your walls, paint frame shapes directly onto the surface of the wall. Choose a single color of paint for a collection of frames and use modern, simple lines to make each frame; use a stencil to keep sizes exact and lines straight. You might create a wall of frames at offset angles to each other, or hang three photos in a horizontal line across a wall. Mount each photo in a clear glass clip frame and place it on top of the painted frame. The combination of textures and depth will add a sense of whimsy to your room without sacrificing modern style.

    Door Frames

    • If you have an old door that is hanging around your home, you can repurpose it into a picture frame to hang or prop against the wall for an oversized, modern take on antiques. Look for a door that has molded sections or glass panes for natural division of photos. Attach each photo to a thin wooden panel that has been cut to fit the size of each area and secure the panel to the door with wood glue. For a modern look, blow up each photo so that it runs to the edges of each panel area. Use black and white photos on a white or black door, or sepia-toned photos on natural wood. For an unexpected touch, print a single photo on a large-format printer and cut it into sections to fit into the door for a segmented view of a scene.
