What Is the Difference Between a Pontiac G6 GT & GTP?

The Pontiac G6 GT was a midsize sedan that was introduced in 2005 and featured a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 200 horsepower. In 2006, the GTP was added, offering a more-powerful engine and three body styles. The GTP was discontinued and replaced by the GXP trim in 2008, and the entire G6 series ceased production in 2009. The 2007 G6 GT and GTP coupe, sedan and convertible trims featured differences in engine, performance and available features.

Engine and Power

The 2007 Pontiac G6 GT coupe and sedan trims featured a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produced 224 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 220 ft.-lb. of torque at 4,000 rpm. The GTP coupe and sedan trims had a higher-performing 3.6-liter V6 engine that produced 252 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 251 ft.-lb. of torque at 3,200 rpm. The GT convertible had the least powerful engine, a 3.5-liter V6 with 217 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 217 ft.-lb. of torque at 4,000 rpm.

Performance and Transmission

The 2007 Pontiac G6 GT went from zero to 60 mph in 8 seconds, while the GTP took 6.2 seconds. The GT coupe, sedan and convertible had a four-speed automatic transmission, which differed from the six-speed-automatic transmission offered in the GTP coupe and sedan.

Interior Dimensions and Comfort

The 2007 Pontiac G6 GT coupe and convertible trims, and the GTP coupe could seat four passengers, while the GT and GTP sedan trims had five-passenger seating. The GT had 38.9 inches of front headroom, while the GTP sedan had 39 inches, and the GT convertible had 38.4 inches. Rear headroom also differed among the trims, with the GT coupe at 36.3 inches, the GTP sedan at 36.5 inches, and the GT convertible at 36.1 inches. There were also differences in rear legroom measurements, with the GT at 35.8 inches, the GTP sedan at 37.6 inches, and the GT convertible at 34.2 inches. In terms of comfort features, the GT convertible came equipped with a CD changer, which was optional on the other trims.

Exterior Dimensions and Styling

The 2007 Pontiac G6 GT and GTP trims had differences in length, width, height and curb weight. The GT coupe and convertible were 189.1 inches long, whereas the GTP sedan was slightly shorter at 189 inches. The GTP coupe had a width of 70.4 inches versus the GT convertible's 70.6 inches, and the GTP coupe's height of 56.4 inches was lower than the GT sedan's 57.1 inches and the GT convertible's 56.7 inches. Curb weight for the GT coupe was 3,415 lb. versus 3,487 lb. for the GTP coupe. The GT sedan weighed 3,457 lb., lighter than the GTP sedan's 3,545 lb. In terms of styling, the GTP sedan featured a rear spoiler, which was optional on the GT sedan.
