If you're wondering where to look to find better job opportunities, you're not alone. The question on many people's lips today is "What are the best places to find jobs?" Fortunately, numerous news, career and finance publications have done most of the research for you and have compiled lists of the U.S. cities and states that offer the most employment opportunities for Americans. Though methods of computing statistics may vary, you'll find that each list includes several locations with favorable employment projections.

Indeed.com Projections

Indeed.com is an online career and employment directory that offers a variety of job listing, surveys, forums and articles to job seekers. The website hosts a list of the most desirable employment locations by displaying the areas' job openings vs. unemployed citizens. The page is updated monthly and includes the top 50 most populated metropolitan areas with their current ratios. According to Indeed.com, as of November 2010, the top five best places to find a job in the U.S. are Washington, D.C.; San Jose, California; Baltimore, Maryland; New York City; and Boston, Massachusetts, all with 1:1 ratios of job openings to unemployed citizens.
US News Money-Careers Projections

In August 2009, US News Money-Careers came up with its top 10 list in a published article titled "America's Best Places to Find a Job 2009." The publication surveyed 2,000 U.S. cities and narrowed the list down to the 10 that had best weathered the recession and maintained the highest job growth and lowest unemployment rates -- below the national average -- since 2000. US News says that the 10 best areas to find employment are Anchorage, Alaska; Arlington, Virginia; Columbus, Ohio; Honolulu, Hawaii; Houston, Texas; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Salt Lake City, Utah; Shreveport, Louisiana; Tallahassee, Florida; and Wichita, Kansas.

According to the article "25 Best Places to Find a Job" on CareerBuilder.com, you'll have better luck finding work in smaller towns like Rapid City, South Dakota or Idaho Falls, Idaho than major metropolitan areas like New York, Chicago or Los Angeles. The article offers a list of the 25 most likely places in the U.S. to find employment based on the 2008 reports by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on national unemployment rates. The top five best places to find jobs on CareerBuilder.com's list are Sioux Falls and Rapid City, South Dakota; Idaho Falls, Idaho; Bismarck, North Dakota; and Houma, Louisiana.

The CNN online news publication offers a list of 30 of the best places to seek employment on the website's "Living" channel. The list was compiled using 2008 unemployment rate data and lists areas from best to worst with correspondent unemployment rates for that year. The top three areas in CNN's list were Bismarck, North Dakota, Casper, Wyoming and Logan, Utah, all with unemployment rates of 2.5 percent. The mid-ranking three cities included Midland, Texas and Salt Lake City, Utah, with unemployment rates of 3.2 percent and Idaho Falls, Idaho at 3.3 percent. The lowest ranking in the list were Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Sioux City, Iowa, each with unemployment rates of 3.5 percent.
