It is ideal for a teen to work at a fast-food restaurant because most of them hire 14- to 16 year-olds and they provide flexible work schedules, meaning that a teen can work after school and on weekends. A teen must receive a work permit before he or she may apply for a job. Teens can speak with their school's guidance counselor about obtaining a work permit.

  1. Cashier

    • Cashiers take the customer's order, handle cash and credit-card transactions and give the customer his or her food. They must be professional and courteous to customers. At the end of their shift, cashiers balance the register.

    Food Prep/Cook

    • Food preps have to keep abreast with incoming orders and promptly reheat or cook food so the customer can receive an order in a timely fashion. Your task can change from day to day. On one day you may only cook fries and hamburger patties, and other days you may make sandwiches and beverages.

    Host

    • Family dining restaurants such as IHOP and Denny's typically hire teens for host positions. In this position, you will greet customers, place them at tables and give them their menus. Once customers are seated, inform them that their waiter will be with them in a moment and wish them a great meal. You are the first person customers see, so you must make them feel welcome by being polite and professional.

    Dishwasher

    • Being a dishwasher is perfect for the teen who doesn't want to deal with customer service. You are in the back and make sure that dishes, utensils and trays are cleaned often and efficiently. Sometimes, you may have to refill napkin and straw dispensers.
