Airplane passengers face challenges from long security lines, weather concerns and crowded cabin space, but savvy travelers should not have to worry about their checked luggage. By staying up to date on the latest American Airlines policies, weekend warriors and frequent fliers can ensure that the size of their luggage, the weight of each bag and the number of suitcases comply with company regulations, eliminating any unwanted surprises or added fees at the ticket counter.

Size, Weight and Number of Bags

Checked luggage must not exceed 62 inches or 50 pounds for all flights except those to Brazil, in which case bags may weigh up to 70 pounds. The size is calculated by adding the outside length, width and height dimensions of each bag. Travelers to and from U.S. destinations, Europe and Asia are allowed a maximum of 10 bags, while those headed to Brazil are allowed five bags.

Charges for Domestic Baggage

As of publication, American Airlines charges travelers within the United States, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico $25 for the first checked bag, $35 for the second checked bag and $150 for any additional pieces. Bags that are overweight or oversize are assessed an additional fee of $100 to $200, based on how much they exceed the allowable rates.

Charges for International Baggage

People traveling on international flights to and from Europe and Latin America are allowed one regulation-size checked bag at no cost. For destinations in Asia or Brazil, the complimentary number of bags is two. For overweight or oversize bags and for any additional bags, the airlines charges $60 to $450 per bag, depending on its size and weight classification.

Exceptions

American's first- and business-class customers may check three bags at no cost. Active members of the military may check five free luggage items when traveling on orders or three free bags when traveling on personal business or pleasure. American Airlines AAdvantage Executive Platinum, Platinum or Gold members and full-fare economy customers are allowed up to two regulation-size checked bags at no additional charge.

Special Items

Fees for sports gear, audiovisual equipment, firearms, musical instruments and pets vary widely depending on the size and number of containers. Please check with the airline for the latest information before traveling. Some items are prohibited on planes, including dry ice, explosives, flammable liquids, lighters, pressurized containers, self-inflating life jackets and defensive sprays such as mace.

Arrival Times

American Airlines recommends that passengers checking bags arrive at the airport well in advance of their departure times, allowing the airline to get bags from the ticket counter to the proper flight. Domestic flights between the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands require customer baggage at least 30 minutes before departure. Bags on international flights have an acceptable cutoff time of 60 minutes before departure.
