Volunteers are necessary to many non-profit organizations.

Many important organizations rely on volunteers to help with their mission. Whether committing to one day or a whole year, volunteers are beneficial. Volunteers cover jobs that otherwise would not be completed because of a lack of funding. By volunteering, you will be helping a good cause and will make your community better.

  1. Big Brothers and Big Sisters

    • Big Brothers and Big Sisters are mentoring programs that have been around for more than 100 years. They rely on volunteers to mentor children. Parents who feel their child needs a role model can enroll him or her. As a Big Brother or Big Sister, you will become a role model to the child, spending time with her and giving her your focused attention. This program is important to build a child's self esteem and prevent him from making poor choices.

    Project Linus

    • Project Linus is an organization that distributes blankets to children who need them. Blankets are handmade and donated to the organization. Volunteering for Project Linus can be as simple as making blankets (according to guidelines) from the comfort of your home. You also can sign up to help with other tasks in the organization, such as distributing blankets. As a volunteer for Project Linus, you will feel good knowing you have helped provide comfort to a child in need.

    Habitat for Humanity

    • According to Habitat for Humanity's website, the organization was "founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live." The non-profit builds houses for people in need around the world and relies heavily on volunteers from all walks of lives. There are local opportunities to volunteer as well as travel opportunities. Often people travel to a location of a natural disaster and work together to build cost-effective and environmentally friendly homes.
