A larger version of the 215 six-cylinder engine that Ford produced in 1952, the 223 was introduced in 1954. It had the most horsepower in models created between 1958 and1960, when the 223 engines produced 145 hp. The horsepower output was decreased, beginning in 1961, to 138. After 1964, the Ford 223 was discontinued. The Ford 223 was used in both cars and trucks. It was also used in the Ford Fairlane, a popular two-door sedan.

General Specifications

The 223 is a six-cylinder engine with an in-head valve location. It has a 3.62500-inch bore and a 3.600-inch stroke. The piston displacement is 223 cubic inches. The compression ratio is 7.2-to-1. The maximum torque of the 223 is 193 ft.-lb. at 1,000 rpm. The maximum brake horsepower is 115 at 39,000 rpm. The normal oil pressure is 50 pounds per square inch..

Tune-up Specifications

The 223 comes with Champion H10 spark plugs. A spark plug gapping tool should be used to gap the spark plug to .035 inch. There are six cylinders that are numbered from one to six, from front to back. The firing order is one, five, three, six, two, and four. The cylinder head torque is 75 pounds per foot. For automatic transmission vehicles, the engine idle speed should be adjusted to 450 rpm. For standard shift vehicles, the engine idle speed should be adjusted to 475 rpm.

Torque Specifications

Cylinder bolts should be tightened from 65 to 75 ft.-lb. The rocker arm shaft brackets need to be tightened to between 45 and 55 ft.-lb. The spark plugs should be tightened to between 25 and 35 ft.-lb. The rocker arm shaft brackets should be tightened to between 45 and 55 ft.-lb. and the connecting rod cap bolts should be tightened to between 45 and 50 ft.-lb. The main bearing cap bolts should be tightened to between 95 and 105 ft.-lb. of torque, and the vibration damper bolt should be tightened to between 85 and 95 ft.-lb.
