Donating goods to a local food bank is a great way to help the community.

Donating food items is a great way to help the millions of people who are suffering from hunger and homelessness. Feeding America estimates that one in six Americans is currently fighting hunger. Check with your local food bank if they are in need of any particular items if you are buying goods specifically to donate. Alternatively, have a thorough look at the items in your kitchen; you may be surprised at how many items you currently have that can be donated.

  1. Canned Food

    • Canned foods are welcomed by food banks as they have a long use-by date on them and are relatively cheap to buy. Non-perishable proteins, such as tuna, peanut butter, refried beans and chicken, are often in demand. Cans of soup, vegetables and fruit are also sought after items that provide vitamins and nutrients without the short expiration dates.

    Frozen Food

    • Any frozen food items, including frozen chips, meat, fish or vegetables, will be greatly appreciated by your local food bank. But frozen treat items, such as ice cream, desserts or Popsicles, will be well received by adults and children alike.

    Dry Goods

    • Dry goods, such as flour, cereal and pasta, are often required by local food banks. Remember that seasoning products, such as dried herbs and spices, can make meals more interesting and have a long shelf life. Leading up to the seasonal period, your local food bank may also request ingredients like dried cranberries for stuffing mixes.

    Healthy Snacks

    • Healthy snacks that are individually wrapped, such as granola bars, are appreciated by both parents and children. These items can be packed into a child's lunch box for school. Individual snacks are often seen as treat items, which a family will go without when times are tough. However, these additional treats can make all the difference to young children.

    Powdered Milk

    • Powdered milk is versatile, as it can be used in cooking and hot drinks. It also has a long shelf-life, as opposed to fresh milk. Alternatively, you may also wish to donate shelf stable milk.
