List of Common Tools Used by a Custodian

Any time you walk through a school, hospital or office building and remark on the squeaky-clean floors, you have a custodian to thank. Custodians spend their shifts not only keeping the workplace clean, but also performing minor repair jobs and replenishing consumable supplies. To perform the job correctly, a custodian needs a number of tools tailored to specific tasks.

Tools of the Trade

  • Custodians often use wheeled carts that are loaded with the tools needed to perform their duties. Cleaning and dusting tools include a mop and bucket, broom, scrub brushes, sponges, cleaning chemicals, a dustpan and dusting cloths. A custodian's cart also includes the supplies the custodian must replenish, such as toilet paper, tissue, paper towels and soap. Other tools a custodian uses include a toilet plunger, basic repair tools such as screwdrivers and wrenches, and safety equipment such as rubber gloves and eye protection. Other tools the custodian uses that don't fit on the cart are a vacuum, floor washer and floor buffer.
