The Yamaha Exciter is a personal watercraft, or PWC, produced in 1998 and 1999 by the Yamaha Corporation, a Japanese conglomerate known for making first-class motorcycles and pianos. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries defines a PWC as a motorboat less than 16 feet long that is powered by jet pumps, not propellers, and where persons kneel, stand, or sit on, rather than inside the boat. According to the Boat Point website, the Yamaha Exciter is by far the biggest of the Yamaha's fleet. The boat even somewhat stretches the definition of a PWC.
Engine and Steering
The Yamaha Exciter is equipped with two 1051 cc two stroke engines. The three cylinder engines each deliver impressive 110 horsepower. The powerful twin engines need to be handled with care, as they can cause the boat to jump on the water. In fact, the Yamaha Exciter can go as fast as 90km/h. However, steering is precise and stable, according to Boat Point. The boat competes in the class of large PWCs against the Canadian SeaDoo's Speedster and Challenger 1800.
The jet boat's hull is made from composite fiberglass. The boat has an 18 degree deadrise, which measures the angle between the boat's bottom and its widest beam. The Yamaha Exciter is 198.82 inches long with a 91.34 inch beam. The boat weighs 750 kg, or 1,650 lbs. The PWC is equipped with grab handles that are positioned around the boat, providing additional support to the passengers.
Like all other powerful jet boats, the Yamaha Exciter should be handled with utmost care. In fact, PWCs are among the most accident-prone boats, according to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Accordingly, many states, including Virginia, made it mandatory that all PWC operators, passengers, and persons being towed by a PWC wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket. When operating the Yamaha Exciter, look out for hazards, swimmers and other boaters.
The Yamaha Exciter comes with a 13 liter, or 34.34 gallon, fuel tank. The inspection ports allow easy clearing of the jet drives from weed or rubbish. The boat can provide seats for up to five people and can pull up to two adult skiers. Storage areas include a lockable glovebox and an underfloor ski-locker. A new Yamaha Exciter cost $36,000 as of 2010.
