EJ22 Engine Specifications

The EJ22 is an engine produced by Subaru that employs the "boxer" design that places the pistons horizontally as opposed to a vertical or angled placement. Subaru developed the engine for use in its Impreza and Legacy models, offered from 1990 through 2001.

Technical Specifications

  • The EJ22 is a 2.2 liter, single overhead cam engine producing 135 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 140 foot-pounds of torque at 4800 rpm. The engine's technical design remained the same through the years it was offered; however, Subaru made slight adjustments to engine coatings and internal mechanical parts during its lifetime that allowed the motor to operate more efficiently and with a slight increase in power.

Piston Design

  • Subaru made slight modifications to the EJ22's piston design in years following the engine's introduction to help the engine achieve greater power levels. First, the coating of the piston was changed to one that minimized and lowered the amount of friction produced between the piston and cylinder walls. An increase in the engine's compression ratio to 9.7:1 led to the slight redesign of the piston head in Ej22s produced in 1997 and in the years following.

Drivetrain and Options

  • The EJ22 was paired with a five-speed manual transmission or automatic transmissions available in four- and five-speed versions. The engine came in its naturally aspirated form and in a factory turbo version that was equipped with the Legacy models sold until 1994.
