"The Wizard of Oz" is a nostalgic classic that features characters that are perfect for Halloween costumes and decorations. The green-faced witch and her nasty flying monkey soldiers are creepy subjects for scary drawings. Dorothy, Toto, Scarecrow, Lion, Tin Man and the Wizard round out the character parade. Paint the beloved characters on pumpkins as a Halloween art project.
Use line drawings from free coloring pages as patterns to sketch painted characters on pumpkins. Images of the main characters, the Munchkins, Glynda and other Emerald City residents are all available from online sources and movie memorabilia. Colored movie posters, greeting cards and DVD inserts provide color guidance for painting Wizard of Oz characters.
Pumpkin Carving Patterns
Wizard of Oz character patterns are available from Halloween decorating and pumpkin carving sites and books. Carving patterns can be easily adapted to provide outlines for painting your pumpkin. Paint the characters following the pattern lines and match colors to pictures from L. Frank Baum's book jackets or movie posters.
Libraries and family members who collect craft magazines, pattern books and needlework patterns have free ideas for pumpkin painting. The outlines from needlework patterns can be used to make a Wizard of Oz character pattern. Needlepoint pattern color charts provide a guide for purchasing acrylic paint for a pumpkin-painting project. Lion, dog and scarecrow patterns can be adapted if original Wizard of Oz guides are unavailable.
Decorating ideas can be gleaned from movie posters, library books and photos from the Wizard of Oz book series and movie. Memorabilia catalogs, book jackets and pictorial history books that feature the movie have pictures of the characters that can be copied on to a pumpkin.
Create pumpkin paintings inspired by the facial features of dolls, statues, plates, nutcrackers and other Wizard of Oz collectibles. The Emerald City fan with a collection of such items has free models for painted pumpkin projects.
