The MIME type is the standard for identifying content on the Internet. While file extensions are informally known to serve a particular use, they are not required to serve that particular use, according to Boutell. MIME types are file identifications based on the MIME encoding system, says PC MAG, and the type and subtype are designated for a particular use. "Image" is a MIME type that can have many subtypes; there are subtypes for most commonly used image file extensions.
One image subtype is the bitmap image (".bm" or ".bmp," ".gif" or ".png" file extensions) and is designated as image/bmp, image/gif and image/png.
Image/x-ico is the MIME type and subtype for ".ico" extensions.
The MIME type for JPEG images is "image" and the subtype is "jpeg." So for images with a ".jpg" or ".jpeg" file extension, use image/jpeg.
File extensions ".tif" and ".tiff" have two options for MIME subtypes: image/tiff and image/x-tiff.
