Interview Questions for Heavy Equipment Operators

Save

The construction industry is one of the most dangerous sectors to work in, with injuries and fatalities occurring every year. These tragic statistics often come down to inadequate and incorrect handling of heavy equipment, resulting in injury or even death. If you are recruiting a heavy equipment operator, ensure that they know what they are doing. To achieve this, you must ask the right questions.

Qualifications

  • Make sure that the applicant is fully qualified to operate heavy machinery. Having extensive experience is a bonus, but it's not enough. If an accident occurs on one of your sites that involves heavy equipment, you will need to provide proof in the form of training certificates that the operator was qualified to use that piece of equipment or plant. All relevant qualifications need to be held by the applicant, as well as being well within their expiry date.

Safety

  • The applicant must be aware and well-versed in the safety requirements of operating heavy machinery - this is a must-have for you, as an employer. The candidate must know what he or she should be wearing when operating the machinery. A high-visibility jacket and hard hat are often requirements. The applicant should also be aware of when it is safe to operate machinery.

Disaster Management

  • A reliable operator who can enhance the value of your company will know what to do in the event that something goes wrong. This will help prevent further damage and injury. Request that your candidate gives an example of when there has been an on-site accident in his experience, and what he did to overcome any problems. You want a workforce that can maintain a level head in times of crisis.
